BRUNO is visiting Earth from Venus. No dude, I'm not Bruno Mars, I'm BRUNO from VENUUUUUUS! Duh... Do you really need to keep asking? If you're a fan of Wolf Alice, Le Tigre, Garbage, Katy Perry, Portishead, PJ Harvey, or K. Flay, then chances are you're a fan of BRUNO—I’m your 21st century riot grrrl.
My unusual upbringing in 1980s Melbourne, Australia, with my parents, Erika Bach and Demetri Vlass, who founded Ape the Cry and Hard Candy, two of Melbourne's iconic indie bands, meant I grew up surrounded by amplifiers, distorted guitars, and inebriated women wearing black fishnets and army boots. My roots in rock shine through my debut album, I SAID NO (Dec 1, 2017). It deals with issues such as trolling, child abuse, sexuality, suicide, and depression ... but don't be fooled ... this is not a 'slit-your-wrists' kind of tracklist.
There is power and strength in this album written and composed by myself, and produced by George Priniotakis at Artracks Recording Studios.
The album cover, created by renowned photographer, Alexander Karmios, is a nod to the electropunk-rock title track, I SAID NO, illustrating the warped psychological effects of child abuse expressed in the lyrics — Once upon a time/in a house where I was known/to stick needles in my dolls/and pretend to hear them moan/I said to the man outside/with the wrinkly hands and eyes/Don’t come into my room/Don’t!" I SAID NO is an attempt to empower victims of abuse and social oppression to speak up and hold their own. I hope that its catchy up-beat rhythm will inspire confidence and strength in you to tackle your demons.
I am also the frontwoman of the group, Keep Shelly in Athens, from Athens, Greece, where I go by my birth name, Jessica Bell.
